The operating environment of most organizations or enterp rises today is increasingly complex and changing rapidly. Leading technolo gy discussions today often refer to the emerging and disruptive technology trends that would dramatically alter our socio-technical and socio-econom ic landscape in the near future. Technologies\, techniques and methodologi es that can assist enterprises with not only positioning for disruptive en vironments but also harnessing of potential benefits provided by the fast changing operating environment\, such as included in enterprise architectu re and engineering\, are increasingly important. A core component of any e nterprise approach are the models that need to be developed in order to un derstand\, organize\, simulate\, design\, communicate\, implement and inte grate all aspects of the enterprise that are embodied in its elements (peo ple\, processes\, applications\, etc.)\, their relationships to each other and to the environment\, and the principles guiding its design and evolut ion.

Abstract \;
\nDecision Support Systems (DSS)
are widely used to support organizational and personal decision-making in
diverse areas such as engineering systems\, finance\, business\, economic
s and public policy. They are becoming increasingly critical with the info
rmation overload from the Internet. While the scope of DSS is broad\, Deci
sion Guidance Systems (DGS) are a class of DSS geared to elicit knowledge
from domain experts and provide actionable recommendations to human decisi
on-makers\, with the goal of arriving at the best possible course of actio
n. \;
\nCurrently\, the practice of building Decision Guidance (D
G) Systems resembles developing database applications decades ago before t
he invention of the relational Database Management Systems (DBMS). DG appl
ications are typically one-off and hard-wired to specific problems\; requi
re significant interdisciplinary expertise to build\; are highly complex a
nd costly\; and are not extensible\, modifiable\, or reusable. Therefore\,
a paradigm shift for the development of DG systems is needed. The key ide
a is to introduce and develop Decision Guidance Management Systems (DGMS)\
, which would allow fast and easily-extensible development of DG applicati
ons\, similar to easy development of DB applications using DBMS. \;
\nIn this talk I will overview research toward this goal\, including th
e recently developed Unity DGMS\, and exemplify its use in the area of man
ufacturing\, energy and power. I will also discuss ideas on how to use the
emerging DGMS technology to translate the potential and multibillion doll
ar investment in Internet of Things (IoT) into business value\, e.g.\, thr
ough (1) better predictability of demand and inventory visibility\, (2) be
tter tracking and efficiency of equipment and operating assets (3) acceler
ated innovation and product support\, (4) improved alignment and collabora
tion among business functions and (5) sustainability and quality through v
isibility to energy and resource consumption. \;
